What Is Card Counting?

Card counting is a mathematically grounded strategy used in blackjack to determine whether the remaining cards in the shoe favour the player or the dealer. By mentally tracking a running tally as each card is dealt, a skilled player can identify moments when the deck is statistically rich in high cards — Tens, Face cards, and Aces — and increase their bets accordingly. When the deck is rich in low cards, the player bets minimally to reduce losses. The technique does not guarantee wins on every hand; rather, it shifts the long-run house edge in the player's favour over many sessions of disciplined play.

Why High Cards Favour the Player

High cards benefit the player for several interconnected reasons. First, blackjack pays 3:2, so a deck loaded with Tens and Aces produces more natural blackjacks, each paying above even money. Second, dealers are required by house rules to hit on 16 or less and stand on 17 or more. A deck heavy in high cards makes it more likely the dealer will bust when forced to draw. Third, high-count situations make doubling down and splitting pairs more profitable because the next card drawn is statistically likely to be a Ten. Popular Card Counting Systems

  • Omega II — A multi-level balanced system that assigns values of −2, −1, 0, +1, and +2 to different card ranks. More accurate than Hi-Lo but significantly harder to maintain under casino conditions.
  • Zen Count — Another multi-level balanced count that treats Aces separately. It offers improved accuracy for betting correlations and is popular among advanced players willing to invest practice time.

Running Count vs. True Count

The running count is the raw cumulative tally you maintain as cards are exposed. The true count normalises that figure by dividing it by the number of decks remaining in the shoe:

True Count = Running Count ÷ Decks Remaining

For example, a running count of +8 with four decks left yields a true count of +2 — a moderate advantage. The same running count with only one deck remaining gives a true count of +8, representing a far stronger edge. Bet sizing and playing deviations are based on the true count, not the raw running count.

Legal Status of Card Counting

Mental card counting — using only your brain with no external aids — is not illegal in most jurisdictions. However, casinos are private establishments and retain the right to remove any player they suspect of counting and to ban them from the property.
